Lederhose meets kilt

All students of the 2AL arrive successfully in Scotland. The weather is much better than expected- warm and sunny- ideal– and there are no midges so far. Edinburgh is a cool town, where we easily can get in touch with the locals here and young people from all over the world. People are very open minded and interested in others, specially in Lederhosen. Our guide Kevin is fun, too. Our first tour on the same evening is a witchery tour leading us through Old Edinburgh. On Sunday night we have a tour of the town, see the botanical gardens and go Ceiligh dancing (Scottish dance) at night. Laura, our tour guide for the rest of the week goes to Inverness, Braemar and Aberdeen with us. She is perfect, as a music teacher, she plays all kinds of cool Scottish music for us on the bus. She knows great bars with life music and entertainmentand on top of that she tells us about Scottish history. We see Urquhart castle at Loch Ness, Culloden battlefield, theTomatin whisky distillery and Balmoral Castle.
English conversation is a big challenge for most of us. It is not easy, but we have to buy our lunches in a shop, have to ask for mystery sites in tows and present the results to our collegues and teachers in the evening. It does become easier every day to use the English language.
One of our highlights is a guided tour at a harvesting site. Two foresters of the the Scottish forestry commission tell us about harvesting methods, about deforested areas and their education. They answer all our questions and, can you believe it, we understand them!
There is so much more to tell…At Frankfurt airport, we talked English to Germans … what happened to us?
